课程名称:Open Your Mind to New Ways of Learning English
课程目标:
We have spent a lot of time in English learning. However, time consuming with low efficiency kept to be a common problem. Using English language became a weak point for some very excellent students. In this seminar, through practicing new ways of study, we will help students construct the holistic view of English learning and obtain some effective measures to support autonomous study. We will organize the contents closely related to current affairs, in a wide range from high quality media and with rich information. We will practice to learn from native speakers.

Theme: Three major events in 2020 in the United States
·The US Presidential Election 2020
·Covid-19 cases and deaths in the USA
·Black Life Matters Protests in the USA
(2) Other interesting and effective ways of learning English
·Learning English through proverbs and quotes
·Learning English through TED talks
·Learning English through famous photos
·Learning English through short stories
·Learning English through documentary films
·Learning English through novels and movies
·Learning English through famous psychology experiments
·Learning English through humor
·Learning English through poetry
(3) Vocabulary learning and the importance of collocations
(4) CV writing and interview preparation
教学与评分方式:
Type of assessment | Weighting | Description of assessment tasks |
Class participation | 30% | This assessment is based on students’ preparation for the course and classroom discussion. |
Individual oral presentation (1) | 30% | Students choose a topic related to the three major events happening in 2020 in the USA and give a 5-minute individual oral presentation. |
Writing | 40% | This writing assignment helps students to prepare for graduate school applications. Students are required to write a CV and a self-introduction for graduate school interviews, based on their analysis of the characteristics of CV readers and interviewers. |
