Chien-Shiung Wu College(CSWC) is a training ground for top-notch talents, a practice ground for education and teaching reforms and a demonstration base for management reforms at SEU. It is named after Madam Chien-Shiung Wu, the world-renowned physicist and also alumna of SEU. Professor Samuel Chao Chung Ting, the world-famous physicist, Nobel Laureate in Physics serves as the honorary dean of CSWC. Prof. Zhang Guangjun, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and president of SEU, serves as the dean of the college. CSWC has constantly adhered to the mission of “bringing together high-quality education resources and cultivating elites” and followed the pursuit of“excellence, individuation and internationalization”. It is also committed to cultivating students into strategists in future science and leading talents in engineering and technology as well as in the industry with high aspirations and broad international vision.

The history of CSWC can be traced back to the Juvenile Class of SEU established in September 1985. In 1990, it was renamed as Intensive Class. With years of development, CSWC was formally established in 2004 and Intensive Classes for Electronic Information and Mechanical Dynamics as well as Experimental Class for Advanced Science and Engineering were successively set up. Based on its thirty years of accumulated experience, CSWC set up Engineering Experimental Class (Chien-Shiung Wu Class) (Chien-Shiung Wu Class for short) in 2016, providing an innovative practice of top-notch talents individualized training mode. In a bid to build a platform providing an open sharing of high-quality educational resources, CSWC launches a series of honors projects (courses) and honors incentive systems. Guided by the philosophy of pursuing an education emphasizing profound foundation, wide calibre, interdisciplinary studies and individuation, CSWC proposes a talents cultivating mode characteristic of three systems (tutor system, college-based system, complete credits system) and five orientations (small-class teaching, individuation, internationalization, cultivation of excellence, integrated undergraduate-postgraduate training).

CSWC pools excellent teaching resources of SEU in order to implement its educational program of providing excellent talents with excellent training. A system of quality courses including nine national-quality courses, one national-quality bilingual demonstration courses, humanity and art courses, project-based basic experiment courses and project seminars taught in English by foreign professors has been set up, which ensures that students are armed with basic knowledge about humanities and social sciences, mathematics, physics as well as other natural sciences. CSWC also builds a curriculum system that is constituted by basic courses in general disciplines like electronic information courses, occupying a leading position in China. Moreover, its combination of curricular and extracurricular activities as well as multi-platform integration has made the complete engineering research training a reality. And scientific research practice has already been incorporated into the training system and been put into practice effectively.
First-class teachers and professional tutor system are crucial supports for CSWC’s talents training. Currently, CSWC has over twenty outstanding teachers, Changjiang Scholar specially-appointed professors and renowned scholars. More than 80% of tutors hold a professor position and have the qualifications of being a doctoral supervisor. The design of the tutor system covers the complete process and ensures that eachand every student is included. Nearly 100 high-level teachers participate in the instruction each year. Among them, 12 teachers are resident tutors and more than 80 are professional tutors.

CSWC has always been committed to building a broad international cooperation platform and channels of communication. In the past five years, more than 220 undergraduates, who were funded by the China Scholarship Council, SEU or CSWC, went to Hong Kong, Macao,Taiwan and foreign countries for exchange activities. Based on the university-level international training platform, CSWC continues to develop its own platform for international exchanges with its own characteristics. For instance, more than 50 freshmen has already conducted their international research studies under the guidance of two concepts of “early”in Introduction to Bilingual Physics.

More than 2,600 students of CWSC have received the education emphasizing the pursuit of excellence, individuation and internationalization ever since the establishment of Juvenile Class. They keep forging ahead and have grown into outstanding talents with solid foundation in engineering, outstanding scientific research capability, all-round development of personality, innovative spirit and creativity. Till date, 1064 students of CSWC have won 551 prizes altogether in International Mathematical Contest inModeling, Robcup Robot Contest, Challenge Cup Competition, Electronic Design Competition, National English Competition and other provincial-level competitions. The number of students who have won prizes accounts for 80% ofthe total number of students of CSWC. Among them, there are 239 students winning 105 international prizes, and 358 students winning 205 national prizes. Besides, a number of independent research programs have attracted public attention at all types of exhibitions at all levels and have won wide acclaims. Students have also published 160 papers, applied for and licensed 83 authorized patents as well as 3 software copyrights ever since 2005.

As for other individual and collective honors, students of CSWC have won 43 awards and prizes including National Pillar Star Award, Chinese University Students’ Star of Self-Improvement Award, the grand prize for Bao steel Education Fund Excellent Student, Top Ten Young Students in Jiangsu Province, Outstanding Student Cadre in Jiangsu Province, and Merit Student in Jiangsu Province. Classes of CSWC have won 14 awards including National Flag Youth League Branch, Advanced Class in Jiangsu Province, and May Fourth Red Flag Youth League Branchin Jiangsu Province. As for graduates, 85% of graduates of CSWC go for further studies in renowned universities and research institutions at home or abroad. Nearly 30% of them go to world-class universities such as Stanford University and the University of California for studies related to first-class engineering disciplines. 55% of them go to domestic top-ranking colleges and universities including Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University and Southeast University. A considerable number of them have made outstanding achievements or become leaders in various fields such as science and technology, economy, and social management, making indelible contributions to scientific and technological progress as well as the social development.
