Alumnus Yang Huanming, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Gave a Lecture on Frontier Science and Technology
On the evening of February 28th, Yang Huanming, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS) and distinguished alumnus of SEU, gave a lecture on frontier science and technology entitled Password of Life—Genomics in the Age of Big Data for students at Chien-Shiung Wu College. This lecture also marked the start of a series of lectures on frontier science and technology to be held in Chien-Shiung Wu College.
Academician Yang Huanming first proposed several questions including “Why to learn Genomics” and “What to learn in Genomics” in the lecture. With the focus on the theme of the development of genomics, Yangtalked about his opinions about the origin of genomics—Human Genome Project, latest developments in the genomic research—syntheticbiology, progresses made in sequencing technique, and ethical considerations in the development of genomics. Through the lecture, the audience gained a deep and comprehensive understanding of basic theories, knowledge and future development of genomics. Yang also pointed out that genomic research is a shared mission of several generations demanding more young people to participate in the study in the future. He encouraged students to study hard and make full use of their interdisciplinary knowledge so as to grow up into talents promoting national and social development as soon as possible.
Prof. Yang Huanming is the academician of CAS and the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), foreign academician of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters and of the National Academy of Sciencesof the United States, Germany and India, foreign member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), researcher and chairman of board of directors in Shenzhen Huada Gene Research Institute. Yangand his teamhave made significant contributions to the progress of internationally cooperated genome projects including the Human Genome Project (HGP), HapMap Project, 1000 Genomes Project as well as researches on the first Asian genomes, human pan-genomics, ancient human genomes, gut metagenomes, cancer genomes, exomes, and methylomes. Yang was awarded many honors and awardssuch as the World Scientific Leaders of 2002 voted by Scientific American magazine in 2002, the TWAS Biology Award in 2006, and Outstanding Scientific Achievement Award voted by Human Genome Organization (HUGO) in 2010.（Li Jian and Chen Jiahao）
